RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Twenty three high school seniors and their parents from throughout Ohio and beyond, participated in the Rio Grande Scholarship Challenge hosted by the University of Rio Grande / Rio Grande Community College on Friday.
Prospective students traveled from as far away as Tennessee looking to enroll at Rio Grande and win renewable scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. To be eligible students must have applied for Fall 2013 enrollment, had a 3.0 GPA or better and be willing to maintain on-campus residency.
“Today was a lot of fun for everyone involved,” Rio Grande Admissions Director Thomas Mansperger said. “The students and their families had a great time with the activities and learned a lot about the abundance of opportunities available here at Rio.”
Friday’s activities included a welcome from Provost Dr. Kenneth Porada, history of Rio Grande presented by Director of Alumni Relations Annette Ward, a financial aid session, Q&A with current Rio students, meeting with faculty, campus tours, testing and a surprise group project.
Students were separated into groups of four or five; given blocks of wood, paper and tape; and asked to build a bridge with an option to focus on strength or aesthetics. The exercise produced a wide-variety of structures, including at least one capable of supporting the weight of one of its group members.
“The creativity and teamwork displayed was very exciting to watch,” Mansperger said. “The students obviously had fun with the exercise, but I think the faculty and staff on hand enjoyed watching it even more.”
Students will be notified of awarded scholarships by March 1.
