Full Text Services
- What is Full Text?
Many (NOT ALL!) items indexed in
OhioLINK's Research Databases
are available
Full Text, meaning the entire
text of an article (or in the case
of
netLibrary and
Safari, an entire book--see
eBooks) is available online. Be
aware that on occasion you might
come across articles indicated as
being full text, but when attempts
are made to retrieve them only an
abstract or summary will be
provided. Then with other full text
articles, they may only be available
in "Portable Document Format" (PDF)
which requires that the browser you
are using (e.g., Explorer or
Navigator) have the Adobe Acrobat
Reader plug-in installed. PDF files
are nice in that they give you the
page image of the article showing it
exactly as it appeared in
publication. However, these PDF
files can be fairly large so the
download time for them will be
greater than other full text
formats. If you do not have Acrobat
Reader, you can download the current
version for free from
Adobe.
- Need help finding full text
resources available through
OhioLINK?
See
Finding Full Text, a guide
located in our site's
"Guides & Pathfinder" section
under the "Find" menu or consult an
alphabetical listing of all
OhioLINK's Research Databases
that contain full text items as well
as full text ebooks at
OhioLINK's Electronic Book Center.
(Please Note: Virtually all
items indexed in
OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center
(EJC) are available full text
and in PDF files.
EJC offers a large selection
scholarly resources in a variety of
subject areas. Like other databases
accessed through
OhioLINK, searching and
downloading articles is free to
students, faculty and staff of
member institutions, but
login is required for off campus
use.
- Where else can you find full
text items online?
Although complete access to the
full text services listed below
requires some form of payment, these
sites still might prove beneficial
if you are not able to locate
desired articles online through
OhioLINK or if you are not able
to wait for a request from our
Traditional Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
services:
Northern Light Search
(http://www.northernlight.com)
allows you to search the Web as well
as a large selection of full text
journals and reference sources.
Searches are free. However, to
obtain an article's full text you
must purchase it first online. Costs
range from $1-$4 per item, a money
back guarantee is provided and
access to full text is almost
immediate. To limit your search to
full text articles, choose "Special
Collections" in the drop down box
just below the "Search" textbox.
Ingenta (http://www.ingentaconnect.com)
also provides free searches of its
electronic index of article
citations from a wide variety of
academic journals. Articles may be
requested on a pay-per-view basis, a
process that requires you to set up
a profile and make your purchases
online with a credit card. Delivery
of articles may either be made
electronically allowing you to
download the article's full text to
your desktop or by Fax arriving
within 24 hours of your placing the
order. Be aware that costs for these
services are not cheap and prices
range from $14-$200 per article. We
recommend that you thoroughly check
OhioLINK's Research Databases,
consider Locating Local Library
Resources or Ask Us for assistance
prior to making a purchase.
ClassicReader.com
(http://www.classicreader.com)
provides online access to the
unabridged text of over 600 books
and 900 short stories. Mostly
fiction, the collection also
includes poetry and some children's
literature. All works are in the
public domain and may be read online
or downloaded (registration is
required for downloading.) While use
of this site is free, a donation is
requested.
