eBooks
- What are
eBooks?
An eBook is a
book in an
electronic format
that can be
downloaded to your
computer. These
digital works are
often enhanced so
that you can set
bookmarks, search
for specific phrases
and even look up
word definitions.
- Where can you
find eBooks?
Several
Online Book Vendors
and publisher sites
make eBooks
available for
purchase. Then,
OhioLINK provides
free access to a
variety of ebooks
through its
Electronic Book
Center, for
students, faculty
and staff of its
member institutions.
NetLibrary
offers over 8,000
complete eBooks on a
variety of subjects.
Titles may be
browsed, checked-out
or read online. With
netLibrary you
MUST register with
their Web site in
order to access
their collections.
Registration MUST be
done ON CAMPUS.
However, whether you
are on or off campus
once in their
system, you should
have no problems
accessing their
resources from their
Web site at:
http://www.netlibrary.com
- What are some
advantages and
disadvantages of
using eBooks?
Some advantages
of eBooks are their
enhanced features,
their compact nature
and their ease of
access. You can
download them
immediately on your
desktop. You do not
have to wait for the
item to be shipped
and you do not have
to make a trip to
the library. eBooks
are often slightly
cheaper to buy than
their print
counterparts. Be
advised that there
are some drawbacks
with this system.
Copyright
restrictions may
prevent you from
printing portions of
the text so they
must be read in
their electronic
form. Both
Adobe and
Microsoft offer
free downloads of
their eBook readers.
These readers help
to improve text
quality and prevent
eyestrain, but for
some individuals
reading digital
texts can still be
troublesome. then,
wiith
netLibrary you
are able to print
portions of a work,
however, their
system requires that
you first establish
an account with them
so they can track
your printing. This
monitoring of patron
use may be a concern
for some individuals
and bring up privacy
issues. For more
details, see the
"eBooks Frequently
Asked Questions
(FAQ)" sections
at sites like
Amazon.com and
Barnes & Nobles.
The OhioLINK
EBC's
"Help" also
provides valuable
information.
